G: Generate
Compost - Nature's way of recycling.
Currently Seymour Magnet School is not composting,
however stay tuned!
R: Recycling
everything that cannot be
reused and purchase items that can be
recycled.
Seymour Magnet School employs a wonderful recycling
program which entails a group of students who meet once a
week to collect and transport recyclable materials. This
recycling crew also monitors the purity of the materials to
be recycled. If a certain amount of non-recyclable material
/ residue is present, an "oops" sticker will be placed on
the bin, and changes will have to be made to improve the
quality for the next pickup.
Students participating in recycling will be receiving
T-shirts, thanks to NYSAR3, Naef recycling, OCRRA, Karen
Hall and all of the students who designed the shirt!
E: Educate
students, teachers and parents on
environmentally responsible behavior.
Student involvement in the recycling is a wonderful
learning tool. Karen Hall also reports that many parents
have confronted her with thanks for helping their children
to understand the importance of environmental education. An
array of posters line the hallways of Seymour Magnet as a
constant reminder of the importance of recycling. Also Karen
has a bulletin board in the hallway which she keeps updated
with current OCRRA information as well as recycling tips.
E: Evaluate
the environmental impact of every
activity.
Karen has plans to fill out the online evaluation sheet
ASAP, as she has kept records of estimated waste diversion
since the beginning of her program, years ago.
Thanks to Naef Recycling for donating a scale to Seymour
Magnet, to record exact weekly waste diversion.
Also the weekly tips Karen Hall displays on the bulletin
board offer insight to students and parents on how to walk
more softly on the earth.
N: Nationalize the Principles of
responsible paper consumption
Seymour Magnet School uses electronic communication to
give messages/ news to staff members, rather than paper.
They call this e-newsletter the "Sentinel"
Keep up the good work!!
